Isis: Shanghai fitness instructor

This article took us a little longer than we expected because we realised there was more to this feature than what we had asked for, and we are thrilled to learn more from it. We spent a little time with Isis, after seeing her WeChat feed and couldn’t help but envy her body, but there was more to that story than we expected!

这篇blog 比我们预想花了更长时间。在和Isis的交谈中我们在羡慕她的身材的同时,发现她的旅程比我们想象中更加精彩!

We spent a bit of time going through her blog about her fitness journey and how she transitioned from working in fashion to becoming a pilates instructor. Her career journey started off when she quit her job as a fashion brand market manager in 2012. From reading her blog, it felt as though her job did not bring her happiness anymore. That got personal really quickly, haha! Many have been in this situation before when work starts to feel like a chore. It just doesn't get you that spark anymore. The feeling when you wake up in the morning and the first thing to come out of you is a sigh, followed by "urgh". It's a challenging emotion, but it takes a lot of bravery to decide, "Nope, this ain't it for me", and pursuing what makes you happy. After quitting her job, she decided to manage her health and systematically. She took a pilates class that had a teacher that never missed a class. This was a kind of inspiration for her and had her wondering, "why not convey this lifestyle and values to more modern urban people who have achieved success, are too busy and lose track of their health? Tell them: When you run desperately, look back and see what you have lost? Health is the greatest capital". 

我们从她博客里了解到她如何从时尚精英转型成为普拉提教练。一切开始于2012年她辞去作为时尚品牌经理的职位,因为那份工作没有给她带来快乐。我们很多人都有类似的感受,手头的工作变得乏味无趣,失去了那种兴奋和新鲜感。每天早上你醒来想到又要去上班就忍不住叹口气,正是这种情绪许成为了勇敢做出改变的动力。“这不是我想要的生活”,我应该去追求让我开心的事。她辞去工作后,她开始系统地管理自己的健康,她报了普拉提班并从未缺席过一节课。这让她思考“为什么不把这种生活方式传递给都市生活中那些事业有成却在忙碌中忽略了自己的健康的人们。告诉他们,在你拼命奔跑时回头看看你是否丢掉了健康。健康是一切的资本。”

Anyway, so she spent a year seriously learning fitness, especially Pilates, including Antenatal Preparation Course and Postpartum Rehabilitation Course. She was also simultaneously running an account on Weibo called #ISeeISay# documenting a fitness journey. Her followers grew up to 10k. She would organise a  monthly BTL event with her followers to do #anywhere fitness#. This became the predecessor of her studio. There were 30 people following her to work out in the hotel gym in 2012 before she was notified that the gym would be one of those chain gyms. At this point, she decided she would have her own place to make the people she trained with feel stable during training. This is the studio that she is always busy in Jing'an and has been around for almost 8 years.

她花了一年时间认真学习健身,尤其是普拉提,包括产前产后护理。同时她还在微博上开设了一个名为#ISeeISay#的账号,记录健身之旅,很快她的粉丝增长到了 1 万。她每月组织一次 BTL 活动,与她的粉丝进行#健身随时随地的活动。这也成了她工作室的前身。2012年的时候有30人跟随她一起在酒店健身房锻炼,然后她被告知该健身房将改成一家连锁健身房。此时,她决定要有一家自己的健身工作室,好让那些和她一起训练的人能继续一起锻炼。于是她拥有了这家坐落在静安区的工作室至今已经八年了,时刻都能看到在里面忙碌锻炼的人。

Some insights on training …

There are so many fitness options out there now, much happier than I was then and much worse. Because for someone who knows what they're doing, I can maintain the great body you like in the CHEAPEST way possible, but for the little guy, I suggest the cost of learning can't below, or you'll have to bear the cost of ignorance, including injuries, getting further and further away from your goals, and giving up in the middle of the process and bouncing back week after week, which is devastating from the inside out to the body... ...So, I went from going to fitness first. California fitness to going out to drop in once anti-social when I have time and practising in my own shop when I don't have time, almost at zero cost, because I am an expert. I am proud to say that I am from Shanghai, China, because of my good training. Nowadays, fitness is all the rage in China, but I still see too many people trying to take shortcuts and work out to please the general aesthetics. After the rage is over, they will remember the original intention of fitness #health.

现在有太多健身选择了,比我那时幸福很多,但也糟糕很多。因为对一个知其所以然的人来说,我可以用最cheap的方式保持你们喜欢的好身材,但对于小白,我建议学习成本不能低,不然你就要承担无知带来的代价,包括受伤,越来离自己的目标越远,以及中途放弃,周而复始的反弹,这是从内心到身体的摧残……所以,我从以前去fitness first.california fitness,到现在有空就出去drop in once anti social的练,没时间就在自己店里练,几乎是0 cost,因为我是expert。在旅行和出差时,常被外国人以为我是日本或者韩国人,因为练的好,我会很自豪地说我来自上海中国。现在国内健身风盛行,但我依然看到太多都是为了走捷径,为了取悦大众审美的健身,我相信盛行过后,他们才会想起fitness的初心#健康#,一切基于健康,一步一个脚印科学吃饭运动休息的结果,才有属于每个非凡人的独特美和魅力,而且才能长久,绝对不反弹

We did want to know more about her journey, how she commits, what keeps her going, and if she has any routines.

Fitness was really just about looking good and getting more affirmation. 2013 to 2015, I trained on my own in addition to taking classes and following them, when I got sick every year, and my body reminded me of the fundamentals of exercise #fitnesshealth. As more and more fitness competitors emerged, my business started to become not so easy. I still haven't relaxed my training for several reasons:1️⃣ If I stop or back off now, my heart can't stand to get worse. At the same time, how can I gain the trust of my clients if my own body is not convincing? So my body is advertising, but also not forgetting the self-discipline, can not easily give up.2️⃣When I am troubled by my career, hurt feelings, exercise allows me to let myself go for a while, focus body voice, body fatigue after the brain will become stronger, not escape is to adjust the mood after starting again.3️⃣I will also have all kinds of want to be lazy, want to rest, want to eat and drink. I will reduce my desire for food as I get older, thus shortening the exercise time that was previously too extravagant for too long. Especially after covid everyone is busy surviving, we need to put ourselves in the client's shoes to consider how to output the most efficient results in a limited time; I have to be a pioneer. Therefore, I will have a lengthy questionnaire for the client to understand his work and life habits. To him, I want my clients to be as efficient as I am in making exercise a part of their lives, even if it's just in pieces like I do, or they can just rest because it's hard to start exercising for someone who doesn't exercise much. It's even harder to start if there are many things they can't eat or drink or do. So there is no very bookish routine, only sort of arrangements and plans according to each extraordinary individual, and will make adjustments on time according to the progression of each person's body. Otherwise, one's body will quickly adapt, and thus another layer will remain the same, and the inner will be anxious again; Prozac era, everyone is very vulnerable ...... I don't need too many customers, I just need my customers to be precise and single-minded enough, so the quality of service is my core competency.

健身的初衷其实只是为了好看,为了获得更多肯定。2013到2015年我除了上课,跟课,还自己训练,当时每年都会生病,身体提醒我,运动的根本#fitness健康#。 随着越来越多健身竞争者出现,我的生意开始变得并不容易,依然没有放松过自己的训练的原因有几个:1⃣️如果现在停下或者后退,我的内心经受不住变差,同时,如果我自己的身材没有说服力,又如何获取客户的信任。所以我的身材是广告,更是不忘初心的自律,不能轻易放弃。2⃣️当我为事业困扰,为感情伤怀的时候,运动可以让我暂时放过自己,focus身体的声音,身体疲劳以后大脑会变得更强大,不是逃避是调整心情以后的再出发。3⃣️我也会有各种想偷懒,想休息,想吃想喝,但因为我的1和2,随着年龄的增长,我会降低自己对食物的欲望,从而缩短以前太奢侈太久的运动时间,特别covid以后大家都忙着生存,我们就更需要站在客户角度考虑如何在有限的时间内最高效的输出效果,我自己就要身先士卒,因此,我会对客户有一个很长的问卷,了解他的作息生活习惯,对他进行对make sense的训练计划设计和安排,包括饮食建议,因为开始运动对一个不太运动的人来说很难,如果还有很多不能吃不能喝不能做的事,就更难开始,所以,我希望我的客户可以和我一样,把运动变成生活的一部分,哪怕只是像我一样碎片式的,也要高效,不然就索性休息,所以不存在很书本化的rountie,只有根据每个非凡个体的排序安排和计划,而且会根据每个人身体的进阶而按时做调整,不然人的身体就会很容易适应,从而又会一层不变,内心就又会焦虑起来,prozac时代大家都很脆弱……我不需要太多客户,我只需要我的客户够精准和一心一意,所以服务质量是我的核心竞争力。

How do we achieve those killer abs?

This is thanks to the Pilates foundation I started with, so I actually don't usually concentrate on abs particularly at all, apart from teaching my own classes, because you're using your core during all the weight training, and that's quite enough. At the same time, for most people who need to lose fat, six-packs made in your kitchen, the primary battle to lower body fat is intake and consumption, and eating smart equals half the battle won. Of course, I'm willing to teach you how to have the strongest core, which is the base of all training; the core is the base of your body. A healthy spine makes an effortless model chic.

 for the abs. 这要归功于我开始的普拉提基础,所以我其实除了自己教课,平时一点都不特别专注练abs,因为所有负重训练时你都在用你的核心,已经完全够了。同时,对于需要减脂的大多数人来说,six packs made in ur kitchen,降低体脂的首要是摄取和消耗的战役,eat smart等于胜利的一半。当然我愿意教你怎么拥有最强大的核心力量,这是一切训练的基础,core is the base of ur body.healthy spine makes a easy model chic.
